Comprehensive Transport Improvements at a Major UK Manufacturing Facility
Client: Undisclosed
Duration: 12 Months (3 Phases)
Location: Midlands
Value: Undisclosed
Project Background
A leading Food Manufacturer encountered challenges related to workplace transport safety and logistical efficiency at their facility. The existing infrastructure, including transport basic routes and parking areas.
The lack of sufficient lorry bays further compounded issues, causing logistical bottlenecks during peak times. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution, Ambrey Baker were engaged to revamp their workplace
transport infrastructure, aiming to create a safer and more efficient operational environment
Objectives
- Optimize Transport Flow: Redesign transport routes to reduce congestion and improve the flow of vehicles within the facility
- Enhance Safety Measures: Implement safety features, including barriers and signage, to protect pedestrians and reduce accident risks.
- Increase Lorry Parking Capacity: Create additional lorry parking spaces to accommodate peak delivery times and improve logistics efficiency.
- Minimize Operational Disruption: Ensure that all improvements were made with minimal disruption to the clients daily operations.
Scope of Work
Initial Assessment and Strategic Planning:
• Conducted a comprehensive site survey to evaluate existing transport routes, pedestrian walkways, and parking areas.
• Developed a strategic plan focused on optimising transport flow, enhancing safety, and expanding parking capacity.
Implementation of Infrastructure Changes:
• Transport Routes: Reconstructed key transport routes to eliminate bottlenecks and streamline vehicle flow – Associated groundworks
• Lorry Parking: Installed new parking bays adjacent to loading docks, reducing wait times and improving logistics.
• Pedestrian Safety: Installed Armco barriers, added zebra crossings at key points, and enhanced safety signage throughout the facility.
Final Enhancements and Project Completion:
• Made final adjustments based on operational feedback, including optimizing transport routes and parking bays.
• Installed additional safety features, including improved lighting at crossings and pedestrian gates.
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge: Maintaining Operational Continuity
Solution: Phased implementation was used, allowing key areas to remain operational while improvements were made in stages.
Challenge: Space Constraints for New Parking Bays
Solution: Efficient use of available space was achieved by reconfiguring existing layouts and utilizing underused areas for parking.
Challenge: Integration with Existing Systems
Solution: Close collaboration with the clients operational teams allowed for real-time adjustments and a smooth transition to the new system.
Conclusion
The Transport Improvement Project was completed successfully, delivering significant enhancements in both safety and operational efficiency at the facility.
The newly optimized transport routes and additional lorry parking spaces have reduced congestion and improved logistics, while the enhanced safety features have minimized accident risks
