Ambrey Baker sets sail on transformation of the Young’s Seafood production facility in Grimsby

2022 update: 

Ambrey Baker has completed work with Young’s Seafood. The final stage of construction involved opening the new process areas into the existing factory and merging the two regions into one. Remodelling, testing and commissioning were completed earlier this year. 

Despite the challenges of Covid supply chain disruption and material and labour shortages, Ambrey Baker delivered this complex “turnkey” capital project on time and on budget. The business’ founder and director, Reg Baker, added “ we have an advantage over the competition because we have our own labour force, plant and stock materials. We are in control and so reduce project risk for our customers to deliver their important projects as expected, with no surprises.” Read below for the early stages of this project.

Ambrey Baker has begun work with Young’s Seafood to transform its Grimsby site into a state-of-the-art production facility.

The remodelling and extension project will significantly increase manufacturing capacity at Young’s. The project will allow the company to expand its already extensive list of products, and create 26 new jobs locally.

Founded in 1805, Young’s is a household name and is one of the UK’s largest seafood suppliers. They produce 40 per cent of all fish eaten across the country.

Construction begins

We were chosen for the £15 million project due to our 30+ years of experience and industry expertise.

The transformation work began in February 2021, with an enabling works phase, removing redundant coolers, ceiling panels and concrete floors to facilitate the new production works.

Phase two of the project – the beginning of main construction – started in April 2021. This is an IChemE Orange Book “Design + Build” Turnkey Contract comprising the installation of new food-safe, resin-finished concrete floors, stainless steel drainage and insulated structures within the existing building.

We will also be adding new ceilings and partitions to create an enclosed production line within the current facility, alongside a new frying room and spiral freezer to facilitate the production process.

A logistical challenge

Due to the technical nature of the project we are collaborating with industry-leading experts on the scheme.

One of the world’s largest systems suppliers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors, GEA, is designing and fitting the line, the fryer and spiral freezer, capable of freezing up to seven tons of produce per hour.

The final stage of construction involves opening the new site into the existing factory, merging the two areas into one. Remodelling, testing and commissioning is expected to complete by the end of the year.
