Ambrey Baker was contracted to reinforce the roof structure at GXO’s Peterborough facility to support the additional weight of a new solar PV system. The project involved a comprehensive structural upgrade, including ground beam construction, permanent propping, decking, and steel supports. In addition, we repaired and replaced the existing roof membrane before installing the solar panels, ensuring long-term durability and efficiency.

Scope of Work

Structural Reinforcement

To accommodate the additional load of the solar panels and cladded ceiling, we carried out extensive structural enhancements, including:

  • Loading Dock Ground Beams (Both Ends): Strengthened the facility’s foundation to ensure structural integrity.
  • Internal and External Permanent Propping: Installed to provide immediate and long-term support.
  • Permanent Support Decking & Steel Supports: Designed and installed additional steel supports and decking to distribute weight effectively and enhance stability.
  • Metal Barriers & Column Guards: Installed to protect critical structural elements from potential impacts, ensuring long-term durability and safety within the facility

Roof Works & Solar Installation

  • Roof Membrane Repair & Replacement: Upgraded the existing roof membrane to improve weather resistance and longevity.
  • Solar PV Installation: Once structural reinforcements were in place, we facilitated the addition of photovoltaic panels to contribute to GXO’s renewable energy goals.

Challenges & Solutions

Managing Load Distribution:

The existing structure was not designed for the added weight of the ceiling cladding and PV system. Our solution involved carefully engineered support systems, including permanent propping and steel reinforcements, to ensure long-term safety and functionality.

Minimizing Disruption to Operations:

GXO’s logistics operations had to continue during the project. We implemented phased work schedules and coordinated closely with the client to minimize downtime.

Weather Considerations:

Roof work is highly weather-dependent. We scheduled critical tasks around weather forecasts and utilised temporary weatherproofing solutions to maintain progress.
